It’s been a slightly crazy and fun packed few days at camp. We’re all getting used to the new sight so things aren’t running quite as smoothly as usual and the blog update has been pushed to the back of the queue in the list of priorities.

That’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with the site, on the contrary we’re loving having the veranda from the centre looking out onto the playing field and campsite. It really connects the dining/meeting area with the camping in a way the school didn’t. And as the official camp alarm clock and therefore first person up I’m really enjoying the instantly hot showers first thing in the morning, it’s the small things!

After a wet, sorry, very wet, setup day the sun came out for the arrival of the campers on Saturday afternoon. All the campers were successful initiated into the Compass pirate crew, performing a number of tests on their pirating and nautical skills, from knot tying to walking the plank. In the evening we sat out on the field and enjoyed a barbecue before tent/ship naming and flag making. The inventiveness of the campers never ceases to amaze.

A clear (and cold) Saturday night brought a glorious sunny Sunday morning as we headed down to Ulverston for the first meeting led by Jeff. In the talks this year we’re looking at John 3:16-17, examining a small phrase each day so the first meeting was “for God” – looking at the character of God.

The meeting at the church was followed by our usual picnic lunch at Roanhead beach, sand modelling and a wide game in the dunes. The discovery of a kraken with a treasure hoard led the pirate tent crews to brave the wrath of the evil (though rather jolly) beast to steal it’s stash of gold coins.

So that’s camp so far. We’ve packed a lot into a few short days and i’m grabbing a few minutes to write the update whilst the campers are out on the first of the outdoor activities. We’ll hopefully get into the swing and do daily updates for the rest of the week.

We’ve also started uploading photos to flickr so check out our photo pages https://www.flickr.com/photos/compasscamps/albums
