Today on Camp our theme is ‘spy movies’ (check out the trailer on facebook), and it was great to see the campers enthusiastically pretending to be spies driving a super-fast car or doing a quick drop-and-roll to evade enemy fire before the morning meeting.
Once this activity had relieved some of their excess energy, Steve Karma shared God’s Word with us, looking at Mark 15 and the account of Jesus’ crucifixion. The meeting left us awestruck at Jesus’ amazing love for us, as He defeated Satan and absorbed God’s anger against our sin. We were reminded that it is through Jesus’ sacrifice in our place that our guilt is covered and we can have a relationship with God as our Father.
The afternoon activity was gorge-scrambling, one of the all-time favourites on camp. The joy of this activity was not immediately obvious to some: “you get there quicker and drier if you just walk up the side” said a camper, but at the end they admitted that having “suffered through a suffocating climb up a waterfall” they came to the conclusion that “it was really fun”. “Wet.” “Terrific.” “Spine-tingling and finger-numbing” are just some descriptions from the campers.
After a hearty meal of ‘bang’-ers and mash, the campers are once again engaged in spy-like activities, racing the clock to crack the code in a number of different ways. Then, to end the day, we will have some time in tent prayers to rejoice again in the good news of the cross.
