Monday – Hail, Caesar!

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears.

Today is Roman day on camp and we were greeted by Storm Floris on waking up this morning. The strong wind and horizontal rain battered the legions first thing. Only a couple of tents were lost, and they were the leaders tents so the campers weren’t too bothered. Breakfast continued as the leaders tried to catch a couple of runaway tents.

The morning meeting today was considering Revelation 7. We were looking at how we are sealed as Christians, even though we might suffer, we are safe in Christ.

Over lunch, the weather cleared up. The wind dropped and the mountains reappeared. Time to kit up and head out into the hills. One group ghyll scrambling near Keswick and the second group rock climbing up in Langdale. Sadly the weather disrupted the plans for water sports, instead they explorer the caves at cathedral quarry.

Back to camp, where over the traditional Roman fare of meatballs in tomato sauce and a chicken in creamy sauce, we were treated to traditional games. Not Roman games but Lakeland games. The hounds were in the showground for races. A small crowd of locals along to watch. The hounds were taken up the hill opposite the centre and were released to charge down the steep mountain sides. First back gets a tasty morsel from their owner and the crown of champion.

This evening we are engaging in Roman engineering. Who can build a tower or arch fit for the emperor? The only materials available are spaghetti and marshmallows. Will they stay up or will the emperor be disappointed?

As the day draws to a close, the legions are ready to retire to their warm, comfortable tents. They are all safe in the knowledge that tonight the weather should be calmer and they can rest their weary limbs.

What lies in store tomorrow? What will the daily theme be?

As usual we’ve uploaded photos to Flickr and will add the teaching to our YouTube channel soon.
