Day 5 – Soggy clothes on a sunny day

A beautiful morning sun rose over Coniston to wake some groggy campers for another day of Camp! They seemed alert enough for quiet time before breakfast.

Filled with more delicious hash browns and beans, campers again enjoyed haikus other campers (and some leaders!) had written about the previous day’s activities. After playing an interesting fusion of rounders and rock, paper scissor out on the field, they were ready for the morning’s meeting.

Jeff Haskins from Lancaster spoke once again, this time from Psalm 1 – showing clearly to all the two clear categories of people shown by the Psalm, as fulfilled perfectly in Jesus. After time to get ready, we enjoyed a lunch on the field, and then split into our two groups for the afternoon.

The older campers donned wetsuits and bashed their way up a nearby waterway. Though ghyll scrambling was a new activity to many, campers showed great teamwork in helping everyone to navigate the slippery rocks, and had a fantastic time. Meanwhile the younger group (after liberal application of sunscreen) went down to Coniston water for an afternoon of canoeing and kayaking – everyone getting to enjoy both types of vessel. No one fell in accidentally – but many of us decided to take the plunge at a pier we had rowed to. Near the shore, the water was beautifully warm – though a good thing no one fell in as the instructor warned us it was cold in the middle!

After warming up with a little chicken soup and washing the lake water out of our hair, we hung our wet clothes to dry in the the sunshine and enjoyed a delicious lasagne followed by pancakes and ice cream!

We decided to finish the day’s more physical activities with a few exciting games of ultimate frisbee (play was not suspended despite the midges – though it did make the run between the bathroom and tents much quicker as campers got ready for tent prayers to talk about what the Bible teaches us about what Jesus is like.

We’re all surprised at how quickly the week seems to be going, but seem to have beaten the weather forecast for another day!

We’ve uploaded the teaching to the Compass Camp YouTube channel
