What do you call an Irish man who opens into the garden?
Paddy O’Daws
This was our camp leaders best joke for Comedy Day. The day has been filled with bad puns, awful jokes and a couple of cream pies in the face, I will spare you any more!
After a silly walk competition we got more serious as Matthew Gray opened up God’s word and we learnt about the Ascension and the implications it has for us. It was so encouraging to hear how Christ is in heaven as a man and interceding for us and that his leaving meant that the Holy Spirit could be given to all Christians.
Our activity today was new to camp – Mountain Biking. We met our instructors at camp then headed over to Grizdale forest. Looking splendid in our helmets and kitted out with bikes we set off into the forest. Using the fire roads to explore and find sections of “singletrack” paths through the trees to blast down.
One group climbed up to Lawson Park with splendid views over Lake Coniston. Those with good eyesight could just make out the campsite. From there we wound our way across moorland trails making a big splash through “the refresher” before a long exhilarating descent down into Coniston. It was great to try something different and the campers thoroughly enjoyed it.
It helped that the day was sunny and dry and returning to camp needing showers the campers sought an alternative cleaning method with an impromptu water fight. Cooled off and soaked through they did eventually seek the official cleaning facilities then settled down to Pie Night, one of the culinary highlights of the week, with a choice of chicken and gravy, chicken curry or cheese and onion. Needless to say there were no left overs!
This evening in a change to the scheduled viewing the campers have headed down to the lake for some games making the most of the nice weather whilst it lasts!
